Message from the President
Dear Readers,
This past week, Saskatchewan secured $16 million in federal funding to process 2,000 tonnes of bastnaesite, a rare mineral essential for electric vehicle motors. The Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) will spearhead this initiative, enhancing Canada’s role in energy transformation and reducing dependency on China for critical mineral processing.
In other news, Nutrien, the world’s largest potash producer, has raised concerns about a potential Canadian rail stoppage starting August 22. Such a disruption could significantly impact product shipments and global food security. Nutrien is proactively addressing the issue but is calling for a swift resolution to prevent a decrease in its 2024 potash sales volumes.
These developments underscore Saskatchewan’s growing importance in the global resource and energy sectors and highlight the relevance of ICERMS 2024. This year’s conference will focus on the economic viability of Manitoba’s raw materials and demonstrate how Canadian provinces play a pivotal role in the global raw materials industry.
In response to last week’s question about hiking boot materials, here are two raw materials used in their production in Canada and the provinces where they are sourced:
- Leather:
- Province: Alberta
- Company: Buckskin Leather Company (Calgary, AB)
- Rubber:
- Province: Quebec
- Company: Vibram (While not a Canadian company, their products are used by several Canadian brands for rubber outsoles)
These materials are crucial for the durability and performance of hiking boots.
For more insights, read our article, “Essential Raw Materials in Crafting Top-Quality Hiking Boots.” Don’t miss this week’s new question on page 3 for a chance to win $10!
Thank you for your continued support.
Best regards,
President Leo Ekhaguere
